About Graham Academy

The Graham Academy was founded to ensure the continuation of excellence in music education in Western Newfoundland. The Graham Academy gets its name and spirit from Gary Graham, the chair of Gros Morne Summer Music, and the recipient of both the Order of Newfoundland and an Honourary Doctorate from Memorial University for excellence in music education and lifelong service to the arts.

An evolving project, the inaugural year of the Graham Academy will feature an Adult Chorus, a Youth Chorale, and training programs for young performers comprised of performance masterclasses, exam preparation classes, and a musical theatre program. Each of these initiatives celebrates and supports the continuation of a different aspect of over forty years of Dr. Graham’s teaching here in Corner Brook.

The activities of the Graham Academy will revolve around a season of performances, beginning with an Advent Concert on the first Sunday of Advent; followed by a Christmas Gala on December 22; followed by involvement in the Rotary Music Festival, a week before Easter; and a mainstage musical near the beginning of June. Different groups from within the Academy will also be invited to participate in Gros Morne Summer Music’s annual summer season as well.

The dedication it takes to prepare for performances, the relationships that form in working together, the confidence that grows in pushing our limits, and the thrill of sharing music with an audience. These are the virtues we hope to share with participants of the Graham Academy initiatives.
