This week Gros Morne Summer Music presents two great performances for the price of one! The evening commences with a brand new set from Corner Brook's favourtie all-female vocal ensemble, Acabella. With new moves and new songs, they return to Gros Morne Summer Music to open up the fourth week of programming.

Then, the ladies of Acabella join the Gros Morne Summer Music ensemble in a reimagining of Bizet's Carmen. In this performance Taiwanese violinist Mintze Wu and soprano Yvette Coleman share the role of Carmen and give the audience a new insight into her character. This is not your traditional classical music show. Come see the GMSM ensemble push the envelope of theatricality and music in a performance accessible to the whole family.

In 2010, Gros Morne Summer Music comissioned California-based composer Jason Nett to create the music for Splash!, a water-ballet set on Glynmill Inn Pond. Then, in 2011 he returned with Cab Fare which pushed the boundaries of a classical ensemble and shaped the future of the Gros Morne Summer Music Festival. Now, in 2012, Jason has returned to western Newfoundland and to his favourite instrument, the guitar. In Guitar on Fire, Jason takes the audience on a musical journey that breaks down the process of composing a piece from trio, to duo, to solo guitar.

In a piece titled Inspirations Jason improvises a solo guitar performance just like he would do while composing something in his own studio. Then, with help from the Gros Morne Summer Music ensemble, Jason gives two well-know guitar standards new life by arranging them for a seven-piece orchestra. He knows how to bring classical music to a new audience, and as Natalie Hoffman points out in his local paper The Napa Valley Register, “Jason Nett of Napa is perhaps the hippest classical musician and composer you’ll ever meet.”
