On the Road

Travel has always been a great muse to art. From the Odyssey to Star Trek, journeys remain a fixture of the stories we love to tell. Week 4 features the theme of journey told by music and with music. Elizabeth Janzen and Diederik van Dijk open the concert with a journey through Europe illustrated in music marking time and place. We follow this with music and narration bringing you the classic travel story "On the Road" by Jack Kerouac. National Theatre School graduate and native of Western Newfoundland, Greg Gale brings this favourite to life with the help of a rich musical score from two of Newfoundland's most talented musicians. Louis and Michael McDonald share rich and varied careers as performers and singer/songwriters in styles ranging from reggae to pop, rock, jazz, blues, and traditional.

And Now...The Once

St John's folk group "The Once" and New York-based flautist Elizabeth Janzen join us for a weekend of trios. We begin with the eerie and haunting sounds of a trio for flute, cello and piano by American composer George Crumb appropriately titled "Vox Balanae" or Voice of the Whale. Then for the second half you're in the hands of 'The Once'. This three piece traditional trio is rapidly gaining a strong reputation for returning to the roots of the folk sound. All acoustic - guitar, fiddle, bouzouki, mandolin, bodhran and three fine voices bring a sensitive beauty and skilled musicianship to the songs of our ancestors from both sides of the pond. Concerts start at 8pm. Please note: due to venue limitations, Vox Balanae will not be performed in Norris Point. David and Diederik will perform another piece instead.

GMSM gets behind the Food Bank. Following a story in Wednesday's Western Star we learned that the Bay of Islands Ministerial Food Bank is running low on food. Determined to bailout this latest banking crisis, GMSM is offering a special promotion: Bring any non-perishable food item to Sunday Night's concert at First United Church and Gros Morne Summer Music will knock five dollars off the cost of your ticket. The show starts at 8 pm, the headline act is Halifax-based Gypsophilia, known and loved by many Corner Brookers following their triumphant ECMA appearance here last February.

Week 1 features an organ extravaganza. Witness the powerful sounds of this mighty instrument shake the roofs in Norris Point and Corner Brook, July 18 and 19. Due to a lack of organ in Woody Point, GMSM is bringing its Cole Porter show on the road. Hits from this great American song writer brought to you by two fixtures of the musical theatre scene Jim Parsons and Mike Payne and accompanied by a three-piece combo. This concert goes July 17.
